Robotic joint replacement therapy introduced at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Due to the current lifestyle change and a fast lifestyle, many people are having problems related to the leg joint. Knee osteoarthritis causes swelling, pain, and stiffness of the knee joint. This greatly affects the day-to-day activities.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types of knee osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a type of joint wear that occurs most frequently in people aged 50 years and older. Similarly, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system damages normal tissues and softens the bone. Such a problem is likely to occur even in young people. The incidence of gout is higher in women than in men. Its impact varies with age. It affects the elderly more frequently.

For the first time, a robotic joint replacement therapy has been introduced at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore.

Dr Rajasekhar, director of Ganga Hospital and president of the International Association for Joint Replacement Surgery said “According to a recent study conducted globally on the prevalence of diseases, osteoarthritis is more common in people between the ages of 50 and 74. It has also been revealed to be the second most common musculoskeletal problem globally.

The study also found that this resulted in reduced activity, inability to perform tasks and inability to do jobs.

The prevalence of gout occurs in about 10 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women over the age of 60 years and is prevalent in 22 per cent to 39 per cent of women in India. Around 1.5 crore to 2 crore patients in India need joint replacement surgeries. However, only 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh people have undergone this treatment.”

Dr Rajasekhar reiterated that “many people are delaying surgeries due to lack of awareness, economy and various other reasons. Our hospital has now come up with robotic surgery to provide better treatment to patients suffering from gout. The robotic joint replacement surgery will be very accurate and the patient will be discharged from the hospital shortly after the completion of the treatment.

There will be no pain and problems after the surgery, he said. He also said that he would perform the robotic surgery accurately.“

Stating that this planning is being adapted to suit each patient, Dr Rajasekhar noted that the treatment is being given according to the patient's anatomy. He added that with this method the joints will be restored faster and the patient can return to normal faster.

Dr Rajasekhar said that for the first time in Asia, Velis has introduced robot therapy. Velis robotic technology has various advantages. This can be handled easily through a computer and due to this there is no need for a CT scan, he said. He added that there is no need to undergo unnecessary radiotherapies and that money will also be saved.

The treatment would give better results to the patients. The proadgest software in it also allows for specific customized conditioning and soft tissue balance of the patient.
